Sealants

Complete Health & Wellness For All

At Lisa J. McDonald, DMD & Associates, we emphasize preventive dentistry to keep your smile healthy for years to come. Dental sealants are an effective way to protect teeth from cavities and decay, particularly in children and teenagers. Sealants create a smooth, protective barrier over the deep grooves and pits of the teeth, where more than 75% of cavities begin. This simple, non-invasive treatment helps prevent bacteria and food particles from settling in hard-to-clean areas, reducing the risk of decay.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. These teeth naturally have deep grooves and fissures, making them more susceptible to cavities. By covering these grooves, sealants provide a smooth, easy-to-clean surface, significantly reducing the likelihood of decay.

Who Can Benefit from Sealants?

Sealants are often recommended for:

  • Children and teenagers – Ideal for 6- to 16-year-olds, as their newly erupted permanent molars are at the highest risk of decay.
  • Adults – Beneficial for individuals with deep grooves or depressions in their molars who do not yet have cavities.
  • Baby teeth – Occasionally recommended for children who have deep grooves in their primary teeth and are at high risk for cavities.

How Are Sealants Applied?

Applying sealants is a quick and painless procedure that takes just a few minutes per tooth:

    • The tooth is thoroughly cleaned to remove plaque and bacteria.

    • The surface is dried and surrounded with cotton to keep it dry.

    • A mild acidic solution is applied to slightly roughen the tooth surface, ensuring better adhesion.

    • The tooth is rinsed and dried again before the sealant material is painted onto the enamel.

    • A special curing light is used to harden the sealant, creating a durable protective shield.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last for several years but should be checked at regular dental visits for any signs of wear or chipping. With proper home care, a balanced diet, and routine dental cleanings, sealants provide long-lasting protection against decay.
