Complete Health & Wellness For All

At Lisa J. McDonald, DMD & Associates, we believe that excellent oral hygiene starts at home. While professional dental care is essential, your daily oral habits play the most significant role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime. By following a consistent home care routine, you can prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

Tooth Brushing: The Foundation of Oral Care

Brushing properly removes plaque and bacteria that can lead to decay and gum disease. Follow these best practices:

  • Brush at least twice a day, especially before bed.
  • Use a soft-bristled, ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use gentle circular motions.
  • Brush all surfaces of your teeth: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and prevent bad breath.
  • Consider using an electric toothbrush for better plaque removal.

Flossing: Reaching Where Your Toothbrush Can’t

Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gumline, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Follow these steps for effective flossing:

    • Take 12-16 inches of floss and wrap it around your middle fingers.

    • Gently slide the floss between teeth, using a sawing motion to prevent damage.

    • Curve the floss into a C-shape and move it up and down along each tooth.

    • Avoid snapping the floss, which can injure the gums.

    • If traditional floss is difficult to use, consider a floss holder or water flosser.

Rinsing & Additional Oral Care Aids

    • Rinse with water after brushing and meals to remove leftover debris.

    • Consider using a therapeutic mouth rinse to help control plaque and bacteria.

    • Other helpful tools include interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, and fluoride treatments.

Your commitment to daily home care ensures a healthier, brighter smile between dental visits.
