Root Canal Therapy

Complete Health & Wellness For All

At Lisa J. McDonald, DMD & Associates, we offer root canal therapy as a highly effective treatment to save teeth that would otherwise require extraction due to decay, infection, or trauma. While many people associate root canals with discomfort, modern dental techniques have made the procedure safe, efficient, and relatively pain-free, helping you preserve your natural tooth while eliminating pain and infection.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a procedure performed when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or damaged. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and when it becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause severe pain, abscesses, and even tooth loss.

During a root canal, the damaged pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a biocompatible material. This restores the tooth’s function while preventing further infection.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may require root canal therapy:

    • Severe, persistent tooth pain (especially when chewing or applying pressure).

    • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed.

    • Swelling or tenderness in the gums around a specific tooth.

    • A pimple-like abscess on the gums near the affected tooth.

    • Tooth discoloration (darkening of the tooth).

    • No symptoms – Some infections progress without pain but can still cause damage over time.

Why a Root Canal Is the Best Option

Many patients assume pulling a tooth is the easiest solution. However, tooth extraction can lead to:

    • Shifting of surrounding teeth, leading to misalignment and bite problems.

    • Bone loss in the jaw where the tooth was removed.

    • The need for a dental bridge or implant, which can be more expensive and time-consuming than saving the natural tooth.

A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth, preserving both function and aesthetics while preventing the need for additional dental work.

The Root Canal Process

Root canal therapy typically requires one or two appointments and is performed by either a general dentist or an endodontist (a root canal specialist).

    • Step 1: Diagnosis & Preparation
        • A comprehensive exam and X-rays are taken to assess the extent of infection or damage.

        • The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience.

        • A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free from bacteria during treatment.

    • Step 2: Cleaning & Disinfecting the Tooth
        • An access opening is created on top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp.

        • Specialized root canal files are used to remove decayed pulp, bacteria, and nerve tissue.

        • The canals are disinfected and shaped to prepare for sealing.

    • Step 3: Sealing & Restoring the Tooth
        • The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) to prevent reinfection.

        • A temporary or permanent filling is placed to seal the tooth.

        • If the tooth is weakened, a dental crown may be recommended to restore its strength and function.

Recovery & Aftercare

After a root canal, mild sensitivity is normal as the inflammation subsides. You can resume daily activities quickly, but be sure to:

    • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.

    • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your dentist restores it with a permanent filling or crown.

    • Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent future infections.

    • Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing and complete any necessary restorations.

How Long Does a Root Canal Last?

With proper care, root canal-treated teeth can last a lifetime. To maximize longevity:

    • Brush and floss daily to keep bacteria away from the treated tooth.

    • Schedule regular dental cleanings to catch any potential issues early.

    • Protect your teeth from damage—if you grind your teeth, consider wearing a nightguard.
